The final photos for my one-minute sculptures.  I’m pretty happy with how they turned out, although a portion of the experience was unable to be captured and that was how reacted to the sculptures.  Some people walked past  with looks of surprise/disgust.  While for one of my sculptures (the one involving oranges) there was a group of people gathered watching the events progress.

One-Minute Sculptures are Occuring!

Over the weekend I have been organizing a couple of my sculptures and I really like what has come of the project so far.  I have plans for all five of my one-minute sculptures, and I have already enacted two of them. One more will happen this evening, and the other two are going to happen monday afternoon.  I am hoping to put get printouts of each sculpture for my final project.  Other than that I am pleased with the direction my project is taking.

These series of photos are what I took while on my walk around campus looking for ideal locations to stage my project. I think that each of these locations could be great venues for the project depending on the time of day, weather outside, and day of the week.  Stay tuned for my next update, which will include concept maps of time, location, day, and possible pose for each of the different “sculptures” that I’m planning.

Final Project: More Research

Today during class I have looked on the web and found a couple of examples that I really like from Erwin Wurm concerning his one-minute sculptures and I have attached the links for those photos below:

and my personal favorite: http://andiepandyland.files.wordpress.com/2011/01/one-minute-sculptures-1997-wurm.jpg

I am now going to go out onto campus and observe.  I think I am just going to wander aimlessly, looking for spaces that found fit this project effectively and that bring about my goal of knocking people out of their daily routines.  I’ll post some photos and comments when I get back.

Research

I have watched a bunch of different youtube videos and looked at a host different photos concerning my one-minute sculpture idea. A couple of the things that I watched are linked below. My concept is coming more into focus and I have decided that I want to create a series of one-minute sculptures and then create a combination video and still-image compilation of them on the computer.  I plan on using myself and some models to help me in this adventure!

Final Project Update

Concept:

I am struggling to decide exactly what shape I want my project to come in. But I know that I want my project to be something that is out in the public of Whitman campus, and that throws people out of their normal routine. The problem is that I can’t decide if I want it to be some sort of live experience that is captured on video, or if I want to install something that people interact with.

Research:

I have been researching Erwin Wurm and his concept of one-minute sculptures.  Wikipedia describes this as being: “he poses himself or his models in unexpected relationships with everyday objects close at hand, prompting the viewer to question the very definition of sculpture. He seeks to use the “shortest path” in creating a sculpture — a clear and fast, sometimes humorous, form of expression. As the sculptures are fleeting and meant to be spontaneous and temporary, the images are only captured in photos or on film.”  This idea really intrigues me, and I think I would really enjoy trying to remix this one-minute sculpture idea into something new and somehow capture the process (in photo or on film).

How to Imagine the Dimensions
Know Thyself: Tracking Every Facet of Life, from Sleep to Mood to Pain, 24/7/365

This article makes me realize how much people truly like to count statistics about themselves.  I had never thought about it before about myself, but I realize that I count how often I run, exercise, study, sleep, etc.  While I may not be as religious about it as the people detailed in the article, it seems to be a common human trait.  People like to keep tabs on themselves and what they are doing.

From the couple of other articles that I read that were linked to this article it seems it works for people too.  People who track their exercise for example, tend to exercise more.  The same can be said for diet and sleep. When people take a moment and look at how they are living, they make the small changes to vastly improve their lifestyle.  I think that this sort of thing is only going to continue, because devices and technology are getting smaller and easier to use, and in turn people are going to track and chart many more things about their daily lives.

Comments on Data Visualization

When looking at data visualization in the context of my other classes I can clearly see that it is usable in just about any arena.  Although I feel that when using data visualization one should consider what it will add to the field of study.  For example in my biochemistry class it would be useful to look at the composition of a protein and be able to visualize where the amino acids occur in relation to other amino acids.  For that subject I feel like it is incredibly useful and helpful.  But for other disciplines I am struggling to understand the importance of data visualization. I understand that in my physiology of behavior class or my thesis I could use data visualization.  But I feel like the use of it would cloud the information as it is now.

I guess you could say that I am wrestling with the idea of data visualization and whether I like it or not.  While I understand that it is useful for certain things, I also feel that at other times it does not add anything productive to a discussion.  I suppose I feel that unless the data visualization will add something new and change the discipline, or discussion for the better then it should not be used, but I would love to speak to you all more about this.
